Fantasy stories often give us powerful heroines, but what I appreciated most about Those She Banished was that the MFC felt like a real person first.
Yes, there is magic, danger, betrayal, court intrigue, and a slow burn romance, but beneath all of that is a story about self discovery. The MFC struggles with self doubt, insecurity, and finding confidence in herself, which made her journey feel relatable and authentic. Those human elements gave the story emotional depth that went beyond the fantasy setting.
The worldbuilding unfolds naturally as she is pulled from her ordinary life into Nassaeren, a place filled with hidden dangers, political tension, and secrets waiting to be uncovered. I enjoyed watching her grow into her abilities while navigating shifting loyalties and discovering who she truly is.
The romance develops gradually, allowing the relationship to build alongside the story rather than overpower it. While there is spice, this is not a book that relies on it. The strength of the story comes from the characters, the growth, the mystery, and the emotional stakes.
If you enjoy fantasy with substance, meaningful character development, slow burn romance, magic, betrayal, and an MFC whose greatest battle may be believing in herself, Those She Banished is well worth picking up.
